Textile and clothing exports with record in July
Since 2002, July did not register such positive values
July was one of the most positive months to the textile and clothing industries when it comes to exports.
With a growth of 3,4% comparing to July last year, exports reached 531,4 million euros, a value that hasn’t been reached since 2002.
The data were treated by ATP and released by INE and also show the growth of the American (more 17M€), Canadian (7M€) and Indian (5M€) markets.
Speaking with Expresso, Paulo Vaz, general-director of ATP, explains these data by the combination of two major factors: “ The results from June were bad. A lot of things didn’t go well and even the succession of holidays reduced the working days, which made drag some business into july. But we can’t also forget that the sector has been growing for several years and, even if the pace is slowing down, records happen, and the seventh month of the years is normally a good month. It closes a cycle and concentrate a lot of turnover.
Analyzing the growth by products, the exports of clothing and fabric accessories have increased 25M€, follow by pastes, felt and cordage articles (more 17M ), and the special fabrics and tufts (with more than 3,8 M€ registered).
Despite the july results, in cumulative terms, the sector’s exports totalize 3,207 million euros, 0.9% less than the same period in 2018.
